„The Enneagram“

Flavio Zanuttini (Trp), Florian Walter (Sax) and Simon Camatta (Dr) have been making music together from the moment they met each other for the first time in 2010. They are mostly concerned with the question of how to combine strategies of free improvised music with more traditional varieties of jazz, without having to compromise on aesthetics. For their new program, they have dealt with the esoteric concept of the Enneagram, a nine-step model of personality description and development. The result is a variety of different musical approaches, from structured improvisation to game pieces to complex compositions that both sound and look exciting.

For those of us living in a time when we can not stay innocent, the hardcore improviser's playfulness is a gospel that simply enjoys the innocent joy of music. – Takeshi Goda

"Trumpeter Flavio Zanuttini, saxophonist Florian Walter and drummer Simon Camatta tried to combine freely improvised music with more traditional varieties of jazz, which resulted in a DIY punk jazz aesthetic reminding me of the Flying Luttenbachers or John Zorn’s early Ornette Coleman projects. For their new program, they tried to turn the psychological concept of the Enneagram, a nine-step model of personality description and development, into music. Their music reached from structured improvisation to game-pieces to complex compositions, which was both funny and intellectually challenging. It was a very postmodern approach that quoted a lot of styles and philosophies, once (in a game piece) they even quoted Sam Rivers’ conducting technique."
– Martin Schray about the performance at A L'ARME Festival 2019, freejazzblog.org
"It is a fearless trio in the genre destruction of the European free music [...] The liner notes are an expression of a sincere service spirit that the composers themselves reveal the background, with the intention of emphasizing their own uniqueness and heresy by borrowing the style of jazz rather than parody. [...] It sounds like classical acoustic jazz, but humorous deviations are set throughout, making it a work that both jazz fans and anti-jazz fans can enjoy. [...] For those of us living in a time when we can not stay innocent, the hardcore improviser's playfulness is a gospel that simply enjoys the innocent joy of music."
